Today is your day Boomer! There is a "good, bad, and ugly" to a kayaking experience at this time of year. Good: it is great to get out there after this long COVID winter, encounter some smooth paddling on sunny days, great scenery, socially-distanced exercise with family or friends, and view nature all around you. Bad: expect wierd, changeable weather in the spring, you might get wet and cold rather easily, most kayakers have to dip their feet into cold lakes or oceans to get launched, creeks and rivers are often too shallow for spring kayaking, and buy some good gloves....just in case. Ugly: not to alarm you, but this is the worst time of year for drownings. People, including Boomers, who accidently fall into cold water naturally follow instinct and breathe in quickly. This often leads to a fast filling of the lungs, cold shock, and sinking. Male fishermen are often drowning victims in the spring and some, like me, use kayaks. Obviously, a life jacket is a MUST! Have fun and be spring safe Boomers. Cheers!
Today is your day Boomer! Relaxing in my hot tub this morning, I had reflections of the 1970 CCR song "Lookin' out my Back Door". Yes, that kind of druggy, but catchy song, about the view of your backyard. Mine is spectacular: colourful sunrises, big ponderosa pines, cheer, apple, fir, and weeping willow trees, two mountains, sheep and chickens next door, two frolicking golden retrievers, beautiful green grass and what seems like a thousand birds...including quail, pheasant, chickadees, woodpeckers, and blue jays. And what else? Well....the quiet, the solitude, and the chance for reflection with no sirens, car noise, yelling people, or neighbours invading your privacy. It was...is...just beautiful, and I am so blessed to live in a rural area in BC's Okanagan Valley. Boomers, what's out your back door? John Fogerty's "tangerines and elephants" or something like my cheeries and coyotes? Check it out and appreciate the little things in life. Cheers...
