Today is your day Boomer! This picture comes from the Rainforest Trail in Tofino, B.C. and the massive red cedar is referred to as "Tree of Life". This is certainly appropriate as early First Nations people used these trees for housing, canoes, and clothing. They were treasured and cared for.....something lacking in our world today. I mention this because Justin Trudeau and the Canadian Government have finally delivered on an election promise and announced a 2 billion tree planting program for our nation, known for its trees. This will cost about $350 million/year for 10 years and employ 4500 people.....but more importantly, help us with COVID economic recovery and reduce the effects of climate change! We know that trees are carbon dioxide scrubbers and help produce oxygen; they also stabilize the land and reduce flooding, boost our struggling forest industry and with mixed use.....encourage tourism! Do you like to hike through forests of big trees, hundreds of years old? I think we all do and I know my grandkids and great grand childen will want this experience in the future! Now....since forestry is a provincial responsibility, let's hope our 10 provinces jump on board on tree train and match the federal promise. Then we will have a real commitment with branches that extend right across Canada. Pardon the pun Boomers; on 2nd thought, don't bother. Finally, some good news from government....something we have been pining for. Cheers!
Today is your day Boomer! Relaxing in my hot tub this morning, I had reflections of the 1970 CCR song "Lookin' out my Back Door". Yes, that kind of druggy, but catchy song, about the view of your backyard. Mine is spectacular: colourful sunrises, big ponderosa pines, cheer, apple, fir, and weeping willow trees, two mountains, sheep and chickens next door, two frolicking golden retrievers, beautiful green grass and what seems like a thousand birds...including quail, pheasant, chickadees, woodpeckers, and blue jays. And what else? Well....the quiet, the solitude, and the chance for reflection with no sirens, car noise, yelling people, or neighbours invading your privacy. It was...is...just beautiful, and I am so blessed to live in a rural area in BC's Okanagan Valley. Boomers, what's out your back door? John Fogerty's "tangerines and elephants" or something like my cheeries and coyotes? Check it out and appreciate the little things in life. Cheers...
