Today is your day Boomer! It's been a bad week for mortality Boomers....three of our favourite entertainment stars passed away, all in their 80's. Kris Kristofferson, actor and singer, with that deep baritone voice was one of them. Who can forget his role in A Star is Born with Barbara Streisand or his Highwaymen songs with the likes of Johnny and Willie(see picture!) Actress Maggie Smith also passed, perhaps best known for her TV role on Downton Abbey and numerous movies. "Again and again across an extraordinary career, Smith gave us painfully accurate portraits of British women, from steely and haughty to fragile and vulnerable – often simultaneously. She captured women’s fatigue with the social constraints imposed upon them and showed stunning glimpses of a world beyond those limitations, full of other potentials and possibilities."(theconversation.com) And then was the death of Pete Rose, baseball's all-time hit leader on the positive side....and negatively, given a lifetime ban from baseball for betting on his sport while still in the game. But...I remember his iconic hit parade, his World Series triumphs with the Reds and his moniker "Charlie Hustle". He is the only player in baseball history to sprint to first base after being granted a walk by an umpire. The only player....so, we salute you three icons of screen, stage, and sport and we say goodbye. Your memories live on in our hearts and, of course, on You Tube.
Today is your day Boomer! And today is another day for wining......and I don't mean complaining. I mean drinking some pressed grapes and enjoying the health benefits. That's right, drinking alcohol is good for you. First, let's state the obvious....only in moderate amounts: two glasses per day for men and one for women. Research shows the following positive health effects: (1) reduces risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson disease (2) is an anti-flammatory(white wine is better for this) (3) decreases risk of high blood pressure and high cholesterol(red wine is a better choice) (4) good for mental health, may increase age longevity, may promote healthy gut bacteria. All of this sounds good and much of it boils down to the antioxidants which are higher in red wine. It seems reds--like Merlot, Cab Sav, and Shiraz--have been studied more.....which means more research is needed on whites. Boomers, maybe we could volunteer for a new study! Cheers!
