Today is your day Boomer! Hey Boomers, we collect a whole lot of money from pensions....public and private. For example, I have my teachers pension, plus CPP and OAS. But...have you accessed all of yours? I mean, maybe some smaller ones from years gone by that you have forgotten about? According to cbc.ca, "National Institute on Ageing says 200K Ontarians have up to $3.6 billion in unclaimed pension funds." What? This is just one province....3.6 billion. Imagine what the number is for all 10 provinces and 3 territories!? So why is there all this unclaimed pension money? One pension plan administrator says "We have, in my view today in the private sector, a system in Canada that is very fragmented, where you have a lot of mini-pensions with different employers. And a lot of the onus on the individual." And many of these seniors are in their 90's and 100's and don't realize they are eligible for these payouts...or just don't remember from various jobs in their youth. Some payouts are around $500 per month! That would help any Boomer/senior. By the way, pension plans do try to contact people who have unclaimed pension funds, but it's not always easy to do so. Privacy issues are a concern and addresses have changed. The onus is on you to remember back...and contact your old employers with this question: "I worked for you many years ago; am I eligible for a pension from you?" Boomers: give it a go!!
Today is your day Boomer! Well, yesterday was my day! My long-awaited dream of building and opening a new high school gym in Summerland came true! 550 students watched, smiled and vigourously applauded as the SD67 school trustees officially cut the ribbon and opened the facility. The kids played in their new gym, in a so-called Rocket Rally, right after that and then 200 more mostly-Summerlanders attended a two-hour opening fundraiser that evening. There were people, young and old, every where: going on tours, eating food, watching volleyball and basketball, listening to speeches, and investing money in 30 community-donated silent auction items and a huge 50/50 raffle...organized by the school's Parent Advisory Council. The final fundraiser tally was about 7000$...made in only two hours! Congratulations students and staff of SSS. Your new gym is finally here, the first new one since 1951! Play on....
