Today is your day Boomer! Many Boomers are voracious readers...and it amazes me what you learn when you read both fiction and non-fiction! For example, things I didn't know about the Fab Four...from John Ewing's 1994 biography "The Beatles": *Former names of the band: Quarrymen, Silver Beetles, Rainbows, Johnny and the Moondogs. *"Beetles" was a take-off name on the backup band, The Crickets, for Buddy Holly. *The name that stuck was "Beatles" based on the old term "The Beat" or Rock n’Roll. *Both John and Paul had their Moms die at an early age. *George joined the band very young at age 15 and didn’t get much respect. *Richard Starkey joined as drummer and changed his name to a shortened Starr and Ringo because of all the rings he wore on his fingers. *John and Paul wrote over 50 songs in their first two years, but only “Love Me Do” was a hit, their first big hit. *Paul, in the early days, taught John how to tune a guitar. *John’s first guitar cost about 40 dollars and came from a mail catalogue. *Pete Best was the original drummer and was actually considered the most handsome and popular band member in Liverpool. *Their first professional recording…”My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean”. *In 1962, the band-on their way to their first recording session in London-got lost in the snow. *Decca Records dumped them after two months for another group called The Tremeloes….who? *In 1962, John married Cynthia Powell; he played with the band every night during his honeymoon with best man Paul. *They did their first Christmas record in 1963 as Beatlemania took off. *Their entire first album was recorded in one day, a 13-hour session, with hits like “I Saw Her Standing There”. Interesting stuff, with more to come as I continue to read. Cheers Boomers!
Today is your day Boomer! And today is another day for wining......and I don't mean complaining. I mean drinking some pressed grapes and enjoying the health benefits. That's right, drinking alcohol is good for you. First, let's state the obvious....only in moderate amounts: two glasses per day for men and one for women. Research shows the following positive health effects: (1) reduces risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson disease (2) is an anti-flammatory(white wine is better for this) (3) decreases risk of high blood pressure and high cholesterol(red wine is a better choice) (4) good for mental health, may increase age longevity, may promote healthy gut bacteria. All of this sounds good and much of it boils down to the antioxidants which are higher in red wine. It seems reds--like Merlot, Cab Sav, and Shiraz--have been studied more.....which means more research is needed on whites. Boomers, maybe we could volunteer for a new study! Cheers!
