Today is your day Boomer! He is not a Boomer at age 90, but he remains a wise scientist, activist, and environmentalist....with words of caution and advice for all of us re: climate change. David Suzuki, in a recent CBC interview, said this: "[If] you want to be liked by everybody, then you're not going to stand for a goddamn thing," Suzuki remembers his father saying. "Humans are performing an uncontrolled, unprecedented experiment with the only home we have." He argues that political will has weakened, pointing to a shift in rhetoric among global leaders....singling out the American president who has repeatedly characterized climate change "as a hoax, as fake news, as a sham." "The science has said, ‘We have passed a tipping point, we cannot go back.'"Survival in a warming world, he says, will increasingly depend on the resilience of local communities — and preparation must start now." And his final words of wisdom: "in the end, that's all that matters is that you try — it's what I think defines our species, that people in the face of challenges, they try to make it better." Not a bright future Boomers, it seems, for our kids and grandchildren...
Today is your day Boomer! Relaxing in my hot tub this morning, I had reflections of the 1970 CCR song "Lookin' out my Back Door". Yes, that kind of druggy, but catchy song, about the view of your backyard. Mine is spectacular: colourful sunrises, big ponderosa pines, cheer, apple, fir, and weeping willow trees, two mountains, sheep and chickens next door, two frolicking golden retrievers, beautiful green grass and what seems like a thousand birds...including quail, pheasant, chickadees, woodpeckers, and blue jays. And what else? Well....the quiet, the solitude, and the chance for reflection with no sirens, car noise, yelling people, or neighbours invading your privacy. It was...is...just beautiful, and I am so blessed to live in a rural area in BC's Okanagan Valley. Boomers, what's out your back door? John Fogerty's "tangerines and elephants" or something like my cheeries and coyotes? Check it out and appreciate the little things in life. Cheers...
