Today is your day Boomer! I don't know, I really seem to be into flowers this week. In particular, today's topic is blossoms! It is blossom time in BC's Okanagan Valley and the rural areas are filled with brilliant shades of pink and white. It is absolutely enthralling, and you really don't get a filling for it, unless you walk through it. Following COVID guidelines, you can stick to your own Interior Health region and venture forth. But remember a few things: bring your cellphone or camera for incredible pictures, choose a sunny day, and don't trespass on private property. Many orchardists will allow you on their land if you make a simple polite request and be ready to wear your mask. Or.....at the very least, pull off the road at a safe spot and just take pictures from the edges of, say, a cherry orchard. This is called "agritourism" and it is a big part of what draws people to the Okanagan! One other reminder, the honey bees are now out and flying everywhere. And they like to "poop" while they buzz around. Sometimes it feels like little raindrops.......one small negative in a hugely-positive Boomer experience! Cheers!
Today is your day Boomer! And today is another day for wining......and I don't mean complaining. I mean drinking some pressed grapes and enjoying the health benefits. That's right, drinking alcohol is good for you. First, let's state the obvious....only in moderate amounts: two glasses per day for men and one for women. Research shows the following positive health effects: (1) reduces risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson disease (2) is an anti-flammatory(white wine is better for this) (3) decreases risk of high blood pressure and high cholesterol(red wine is a better choice) (4) good for mental health, may increase age longevity, may promote healthy gut bacteria. All of this sounds good and much of it boils down to the antioxidants which are higher in red wine. It seems reds--like Merlot, Cab Sav, and Shiraz--have been studied more.....which means more research is needed on whites. Boomers, maybe we could volunteer for a new study! Cheers!
