Today is your day Boomer! I am back from summer holiday just in time to miss the last 10 days of the Olympics. Too bad, because Canada did great.....placing 11th overall with 24 medals including 7 gold and it was our best performance in the summer event since the Los Angeles games in 1984. Why does this matter to Boomers? Well, many of us are sports fans and loyal Canadians....but I also see a trend of many older athletes qualifying for the games. For example, a woman athlete from Kelowna placed 9th in the marathon and she is easily over the age of 40! This is inspiring for our age group as we see more and more fit, active, and very athletic Boomers out there exercising every day and/or competing in significant sporting events. Good examples are the BC Summer and Winter Games, held annually, and the Senior Games competitions. Most of these were put on hold during the time of COVID, but they should be coming back soon. In the meantime, Boomers, we can train and get ready and inspire ourselves just like all those Canadians in Japan! By the way, there were no COVID cases in all 840 Canadians at the Games! That is awesome too! Cheers.
Today is your day Boomer! And today is another day for wining......and I don't mean complaining. I mean drinking some pressed grapes and enjoying the health benefits. That's right, drinking alcohol is good for you. First, let's state the obvious....only in moderate amounts: two glasses per day for men and one for women. Research shows the following positive health effects: (1) reduces risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson disease (2) is an anti-flammatory(white wine is better for this) (3) decreases risk of high blood pressure and high cholesterol(red wine is a better choice) (4) good for mental health, may increase age longevity, may promote healthy gut bacteria. All of this sounds good and much of it boils down to the antioxidants which are higher in red wine. It seems reds--like Merlot, Cab Sav, and Shiraz--have been studied more.....which means more research is needed on whites. Boomers, maybe we could volunteer for a new study! Cheers!
