Today is your day Boomer! It is the ultimate Boomer day excursion....salmon fishing off the inner coast of Vancouver Island, near Campbell River the self-proclaimed "Salmon Fishing Capital of the World". That's what I encountered yesterday as I met a group of six Boomers returning from fishing in the late afternoon of a beautiful day on the water. Each of them had a nice suntan, a buzz-on from a few beers and a big bucket full of Spring Salmon. If you didn't know, the Spring or sometimes called Chinook Salmon, are the biggest and maybe-the-best fighting salmon on Canada's west coast. These guys had three each with the biggest being around 21 pounds; they also had lots "fish stories", lots of laughs, and a great time together. What lay ahead in the evening? Fish cleaning, a big dinner at a local fish resort, and a few more beverages....I'm sure. Two of them had even travelled from California for this fantastic experience! It's what we can do Boomers. Many of us have the time, money, and inspiration to get out there, do something unique, and experience retired life after 30-40 years of work and raising kids. I say go for it!! Cheers.
Today is your day Boomer! And today is another day for wining......and I don't mean complaining. I mean drinking some pressed grapes and enjoying the health benefits. That's right, drinking alcohol is good for you. First, let's state the obvious....only in moderate amounts: two glasses per day for men and one for women. Research shows the following positive health effects: (1) reduces risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson disease (2) is an anti-flammatory(white wine is better for this) (3) decreases risk of high blood pressure and high cholesterol(red wine is a better choice) (4) good for mental health, may increase age longevity, may promote healthy gut bacteria. All of this sounds good and much of it boils down to the antioxidants which are higher in red wine. It seems reds--like Merlot, Cab Sav, and Shiraz--have been studied more.....which means more research is needed on whites. Boomers, maybe we could volunteer for a new study! Cheers!
