Today is your day Boomer! It is Sunday and I rarely blog on this day....but to take your mind off COVID protests, I remind you that it is almost February. That means we are a step closer to spring and events like Groundhog Day and Family Day. But as you ponder trucker blockades, also remember this: cancer remains the leading cause of death in Canada. An estimated 2 in 5 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and about 1 in 4 will die from cancer. That means tens of thousands of Canadians will die every year from cancer....including many Boomers, and close family and friends of all of us. So, in February, you can do something to help. It is called "Dry Feb" and to quote the website: Dry Feb is a fundraiser that challenges you to go alcohol-free in February and raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. It helps you get healthy while also raising funds to make a difference for Canadians affected by cancer. Does one month off alcohol sound too big of a challenge? Choose to participate for the whole month, 21 days, 14 days, or customize a timeframe that works for you. Already, over 20,000 Canadians have pledged to kick the booze and make pledges over one million dollars! Boomers, think about it today on this the second last day of January, and then access the website for more info. This is where I usually end my blog with "cheers", which seems inappropriate today....so instead, I will say "have a good, thoughtful, active day!"
Today is your day Boomer! Well, yesterday was my day! My long-awaited dream of building and opening a new high school gym in Summerland came true! 550 students watched, smiled and vigourously applauded as the SD67 school trustees officially cut the ribbon and opened the facility. The kids played in their new gym, in a so-called Rocket Rally, right after that and then 200 more mostly-Summerlanders attended a two-hour opening fundraiser that evening. There were people, young and old, every where: going on tours, eating food, watching volleyball and basketball, listening to speeches, and investing money in 30 community-donated silent auction items and a huge 50/50 raffle...organized by the school's Parent Advisory Council. The final fundraiser tally was about 7000$...made in only two hours! Congratulations students and staff of SSS. Your new gym is finally here, the first new one since 1951! Play on....
