Today is your day Boomer! Now that the Ottawa blackade is over, it is time to reflect on some of its rights and wrongs. As a long-time Civics teacher, I applaude the protestors for their fortitude, courage, persistance, and passion! But.....they did not follow some basic civics lessons, and that led to their downfall. Civil disobediance, that is breaking the law, is a very last resort in any protest and they did this in spades: blockading public roads, breaking noise bylaws, bringing weapons like smoke bombs, intimidating and harrassing residents, spreading messages of hate, violating statues and war memorials, and-worst of all-demanding an anti-democratic citizens assembly take over government! No wonder government officials would not listen to or meet with you; no wonder your message became badly tainted; no wonder the silent majority of Canadians disagreed with you, and no wonder masses of police were brought in to quell you. Your message of peaceful demonstration was hypocritical and it failed. The final irony through all of this is that you wanted COVID mandates taken away by all levels of government; if you had just waited a little longer, you can see that is happening now....a natural occurance because Omicron is fading away. A little patience and no law-breaking would have served you well. A lesson well learned from an old Boomer teacher.....
Today is your day Boomer! Relaxing in my hot tub this morning, I had reflections of the 1970 CCR song "Lookin' out my Back Door". Yes, that kind of druggy, but catchy song, about the view of your backyard. Mine is spectacular: colourful sunrises, big ponderosa pines, cheer, apple, fir, and weeping willow trees, two mountains, sheep and chickens next door, two frolicking golden retrievers, beautiful green grass and what seems like a thousand birds...including quail, pheasant, chickadees, woodpeckers, and blue jays. And what else? Well....the quiet, the solitude, and the chance for reflection with no sirens, car noise, yelling people, or neighbours invading your privacy. It was...is...just beautiful, and I am so blessed to live in a rural area in BC's Okanagan Valley. Boomers, what's out your back door? John Fogerty's "tangerines and elephants" or something like my cheeries and coyotes? Check it out and appreciate the little things in life. Cheers...
