Today is your day Boomer! I truly feel very sorry for the president of Ukraine. His country continues to be invaded by Russia, millions of citizens are leaving, thousands are dying, and his nation is being ruined. The world, including NATO, is sending military equipment, offering refugee support, and is imposing huge economic sanctions.....and yet, he continues to ask/demand NATO to get "militarily" involved and enforce a no-fly zone over his country. No....we can't do that. Mr. Zelensky, just look at this table. Russia possesses about half of the world's 13,000 nuclear weapons and the unpredictable Putin says he will use them if NATO nations like Canada and the U.S. get "directly" involved. First of all, the NATO constitution does not allow this because Ukraine is not a member, and secondly, the nukes would end-up flying from both sides. There is a Cold War term entitled "MAD", and believe me, it is not outdated. It means "Mutally Assured Destruction" and it works because nations, like Russia, know that if they release nukes....they will die just as badly as the country they are shooting at! This is why we have not seen nuclear weapons used in war since Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Oh.....one more thing, Mr. Zelensky, the bombs today are 3000 times more powerful than the ones used in WWII! We just can't take that risk. Sorry....it could mean the end of the world. Boomers, as a high school history teacher for 30 years, that is my take....
Today is your day Boomer! Relaxing in my hot tub this morning, I had reflections of the 1970 CCR song "Lookin' out my Back Door". Yes, that kind of druggy, but catchy song, about the view of your backyard. Mine is spectacular: colourful sunrises, big ponderosa pines, cheer, apple, fir, and weeping willow trees, two mountains, sheep and chickens next door, two frolicking golden retrievers, beautiful green grass and what seems like a thousand birds...including quail, pheasant, chickadees, woodpeckers, and blue jays. And what else? Well....the quiet, the solitude, and the chance for reflection with no sirens, car noise, yelling people, or neighbours invading your privacy. It was...is...just beautiful, and I am so blessed to live in a rural area in BC's Okanagan Valley. Boomers, what's out your back door? John Fogerty's "tangerines and elephants" or something like my cheeries and coyotes? Check it out and appreciate the little things in life. Cheers...
