Today is your day Boomer! But today is NOT a good day for a suntan. As the hot days of August continue, we Boomers must remain steadfast in our fight against sunshine-inducing skin cancer. Afterall, we grew up in the time of baby oil, CopperTone, halter tops, muscle shirts, and sunny days without any protection at all. Check your skin....do you see wrinkles, brown and red spots, and leathery texture? Over one million Americans and Canadians die every year from skin cancer and I bet many are Boomers. What to do? 1) Check out a certified health list of the top sunscreens on the market. Use at least SPF 30 and don't be afraid to spend some money. It is worth it. 2) Select cream products with zinc, titanium oxide, avobenzone or Mexoryl SX. You want “broad spectrum protection,” water resistant for beach, pool or exercise—SPF 30 for beach and pool. 3) As part of your health regimen, perform a monthly self-examination in search of any suspicious spots. Keep track of moles: size, shape and colour and tell your doctor. 4) Visit your dermatologist annually for a thorough skin once-over. 5) Other suggestions include wearing hats and loose clothing in the sun, lather up even on cloudy days, and keep applying sunscreen every two hours. Follow these tips and you will build a better Boomer! Cheers.
Today is your day Boomer! And today is another day for wining......and I don't mean complaining. I mean drinking some pressed grapes and enjoying the health benefits. That's right, drinking alcohol is good for you. First, let's state the obvious....only in moderate amounts: two glasses per day for men and one for women. Research shows the following positive health effects: (1) reduces risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson disease (2) is an anti-flammatory(white wine is better for this) (3) decreases risk of high blood pressure and high cholesterol(red wine is a better choice) (4) good for mental health, may increase age longevity, may promote healthy gut bacteria. All of this sounds good and much of it boils down to the antioxidants which are higher in red wine. It seems reds--like Merlot, Cab Sav, and Shiraz--have been studied more.....which means more research is needed on whites. Boomers, maybe we could volunteer for a new study! Cheers!
