Today is your day Boomer! It is called a "Boomer Belly" but really it could apply to any man reaching middle age. Check out the picture and then look down at your stomach. Is it happening to you? Guys, we used to eat like a horse in our 20's and 30's and never gain an ounce. Now....we have a slower metabolism rate and if we still eat the same, we will gain belly fat! So, here are some tips to flatten that stomach again. According to Nutritionist Amelia Freer, less alcohol and sugar is very important: "Sugar has emerged as the real dietary villain in the last few years. And it's not just in biscuits or sweets. Many of us are having huge amounts without realising in ready meals, pasta, salad sauces, yoghurts and refined carbs such as bagels, pasta, bread and rice. All this sugar stimulates the production of insulin, which leads to weight gain, especially around the stomach and waist." Fewer beers boys! Most of the other tips focus around fitness; obviously we need to do more and more often. This includes some weightlifting and a gradual return to being very active. Reduction of stress is also on the list, eating more fruits and veggies, and incorporating rest and recovery in workouts. Finally, be realistic in your goals. A flatter belly can't happen overnight. Workout partners and spouses will be a big factor. Good luck belly boy....
Today is your day Boomer! And today is another day for wining......and I don't mean complaining. I mean drinking some pressed grapes and enjoying the health benefits. That's right, drinking alcohol is good for you. First, let's state the obvious....only in moderate amounts: two glasses per day for men and one for women. Research shows the following positive health effects: (1) reduces risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson disease (2) is an anti-flammatory(white wine is better for this) (3) decreases risk of high blood pressure and high cholesterol(red wine is a better choice) (4) good for mental health, may increase age longevity, may promote healthy gut bacteria. All of this sounds good and much of it boils down to the antioxidants which are higher in red wine. It seems reds--like Merlot, Cab Sav, and Shiraz--have been studied more.....which means more research is needed on whites. Boomers, maybe we could volunteer for a new study! Cheers!
