Today is your day Boomer! I kind of have this feeling....but no stats to support it, that most Boomers want to keep the monarchy in Canada. Yes, the queen has passed and Charles is taking over, so debate is heating up on whether we should dump that tradition. Become a republic like the US and France, about 51% of Canadians said in a recent poll. Only about 1/4 of us want to maintain the King as our official head of state(he has only ceremonial power, of course). But what most people don't realize is that our constitution makes it very difficult to change; according to CTV News: "for Canada to sever its longstanding ties to the monarchy and become a republic, it would require agreement between the House of Commons, the Senate and all 10 provinces. Known as 'amendment by unanimous consent'". Historians know that getting all the provinces to agree on anything is virtually impossible. It won't happen. It seems we are stuck with Charles...and most Boomers may think that is okay. Afterall, we are an older generation and more committed to traditions than many other age groups. Good luck new King, you're going to need it. Cheers!
Today is your day Boomer! Relaxing in my hot tub this morning, I had reflections of the 1970 CCR song "Lookin' out my Back Door". Yes, that kind of druggy, but catchy song, about the view of your backyard. Mine is spectacular: colourful sunrises, big ponderosa pines, cheer, apple, fir, and weeping willow trees, two mountains, sheep and chickens next door, two frolicking golden retrievers, beautiful green grass and what seems like a thousand birds...including quail, pheasant, chickadees, woodpeckers, and blue jays. And what else? Well....the quiet, the solitude, and the chance for reflection with no sirens, car noise, yelling people, or neighbours invading your privacy. It was...is...just beautiful, and I am so blessed to live in a rural area in BC's Okanagan Valley. Boomers, what's out your back door? John Fogerty's "tangerines and elephants" or something like my cheeries and coyotes? Check it out and appreciate the little things in life. Cheers...
