Today is your day Boomer! The oldest person in Canada passed away this week in Vancouver. Shige Mineshiba was a whopping 113 years old and her family claims one secret to old age was a cup of matcha green tea every day! Dr. Roger Wong, who specializes in old age, says "Canadians are living longer, and B.C. has seen its population of people age over 100 grow 14 per cent between the 2016 and 2021 censuses. He says genetics are part of the equation for people who live to be supercentenarians — Shige had a sister who lived to 109, for instance — but there are three lifestyle factors many share: regular exercise, plenty of social contact, and a good diet."
Okay Boomers, we do those three things don't we? Or we should be! But what is the average life expectancy now for Canadians like us? It is 83.....about 81 for men and 84 for women, but the good news is that is up .18% from last year! Yes, we are living longer. Boomers, let's make the most of it.....and maybe try that green tea!? Cheers.
Today is your day Boomer! Well, yesterday was my day! My long-awaited dream of building and opening a new high school gym in Summerland came true! 550 students watched, smiled and vigourously applauded as the SD67 school trustees officially cut the ribbon and opened the facility. The kids played in their new gym, in a so-called Rocket Rally, right after that and then 200 more mostly-Summerlanders attended a two-hour opening fundraiser that evening. There were people, young and old, every where: going on tours, eating food, watching volleyball and basketball, listening to speeches, and investing money in 30 community-donated silent auction items and a huge 50/50 raffle...organized by the school's Parent Advisory Council. The final fundraiser tally was about 7000$...made in only two hours! Congratulations students and staff of SSS. Your new gym is finally here, the first new one since 1951! Play on....
