Today is your day Boomer! One of my goals with this blog is to help Boomers be more active, physically and mentally, and try new things. Yesterday, I talked about new electric skates as a possible addition to Boomer exercise routines. Today, it is a short story writing contest sponsored by UBCO every year since 1997! You can sitdown and write a fictional short story 1000-4000 words and submit it by early February. There are some restrictions, however, including this one based on where you live: "This contest is open to all residents of the southern interior of British Columbia: east of Hope, west of the Alberta border, north of the US border and south of Williams Lake. (residents of Hope and Williams Lake are eligible)". First prize is $1000 and there are other money awards, but this is not why I would do this Boomers. It is a challenge, something new, and maybe a talent that is not yet realized in your soul and brain. It is also something to do during these long, cold days of winter as we spend many hours inside. Want more info? Here is the website: https://fccs.ok.ubc.ca/about/events-workshops/short-story/ Go for it Boomers. I gave it a try a few years ago, didn't win, but thoroughly enjoyed the process. Cheers!
Today is your day Boomer! Relaxing in my hot tub this morning, I had reflections of the 1970 CCR song "Lookin' out my Back Door". Yes, that kind of druggy, but catchy song, about the view of your backyard. Mine is spectacular: colourful sunrises, big ponderosa pines, cheer, apple, fir, and weeping willow trees, two mountains, sheep and chickens next door, two frolicking golden retrievers, beautiful green grass and what seems like a thousand birds...including quail, pheasant, chickadees, woodpeckers, and blue jays. And what else? Well....the quiet, the solitude, and the chance for reflection with no sirens, car noise, yelling people, or neighbours invading your privacy. It was...is...just beautiful, and I am so blessed to live in a rural area in BC's Okanagan Valley. Boomers, what's out your back door? John Fogerty's "tangerines and elephants" or something like my cheeries and coyotes? Check it out and appreciate the little things in life. Cheers...
