Today is your day Boomer! Baby Boomers in Canada and the United States hold about 50% of the wealth in our two nations, so naturally business wants to know more about what we spend our money on. A recent article on the Yahoofinance website outlines our 10 biggest spending habits...and what do you think is number one? Dining out and fitness memberships are #2 and 3 respectively, but the top focus is our "house"! Yahoo says "even if baby boomers have a fully paid-off house, they still have to take care of property taxes, repairs, maintenance, etc. Across the US and Canada, property taxes are on the rise as cities scramble to fund parks, recreation, and other municipal services." Number 4 is no surprise, especially in the winter: vacations. Five is coffee...we do like our Tim's! Number 6 is gifts for family and friends. Seven is electronics: contrary to popular belief, boomers are much more tech-savvy than the stereotypes give us credit. In fact, more seniors are embracing technology as a way to make new connections, stay in touch with family, and be much more mobile than their parents were in the past. Smartphones, tablets, and smart home components like Alexa-equipped speakers are growing in popularity. Eight is supplements to help enhance our energy; nine is new clothes, and ten...a big favourite, is pets and all their accessories! Boomers, we know "money makes the world go 'round" and while boomers are not the only generation spending money, our spending habits do influence products and services across a wide variety of industries. Cheers!
Today is your day Boomer! And today is another day for wining......and I don't mean complaining. I mean drinking some pressed grapes and enjoying the health benefits. That's right, drinking alcohol is good for you. First, let's state the obvious....only in moderate amounts: two glasses per day for men and one for women. Research shows the following positive health effects: (1) reduces risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson disease (2) is an anti-flammatory(white wine is better for this) (3) decreases risk of high blood pressure and high cholesterol(red wine is a better choice) (4) good for mental health, may increase age longevity, may promote healthy gut bacteria. All of this sounds good and much of it boils down to the antioxidants which are higher in red wine. It seems reds--like Merlot, Cab Sav, and Shiraz--have been studied more.....which means more research is needed on whites. Boomers, maybe we could volunteer for a new study! Cheers!
