Today is your day Boomer! Needless to say, Boomers love E-bikes. In fact, our generation is the biggest purchaser of E-bikes and they get a lot of use.....so, many studies are now coming out on their impact. The follwing statistics come from many different surveys in many different nations like Switzerland. "Researchers found the severity of injuries was significantly worse in the e-bike group, and particularly worrisome was the increased likelihood of trauma to the thorax/chest. Body regions most affected were the extremities(78 per cent) and external/skin(46 per cent)." Hey, Boomers, looks like we are going too fast when we fall! And this is what we crash into; "most incidents were either single-bicycle crashes(66 per cent) or automobile collisions(26 per cent)." So, 2/3 of the time, we crash because of our own actions! What else? "The average age of e-bikers was 65 years; conventional cyclists, 39 years. E-bikers were admitted to the hospital more often, and for longer periods, and they underwent surgery more often. E-bikers had multiple severe injuries twice as often as conventional cyclists." Oh boy, sounds like we are more reckless on these bikes! But we are still buying lots of them; "E-bikes accounted for 52 per cent of all bicycles sold in 2021, up from 29 per cent in 2016, and just 15 per cent in 2011." Yup, E-bikes.....something we love to do Boomers, but better ride at a reasonable speed, don't take risks, and wear helmuts and protective clothing. Enjoy...safely. Cheers.
Today is your day Boomer! Well, yesterday was my day! My long-awaited dream of building and opening a new high school gym in Summerland came true! 550 students watched, smiled and vigourously applauded as the SD67 school trustees officially cut the ribbon and opened the facility. The kids played in their new gym, in a so-called Rocket Rally, right after that and then 200 more mostly-Summerlanders attended a two-hour opening fundraiser that evening. There were people, young and old, every where: going on tours, eating food, watching volleyball and basketball, listening to speeches, and investing money in 30 community-donated silent auction items and a huge 50/50 raffle...organized by the school's Parent Advisory Council. The final fundraiser tally was about 7000$...made in only two hours! Congratulations students and staff of SSS. Your new gym is finally here, the first new one since 1951! Play on....
