Today is your day Boomer! Two health studies and one big health recommendation for Boomers today. The first is a survey of Canadians that shows about 1/3 of us are not exercising at all; for me, it is a little surprising because the rate has gone down since COVID started. I would think people holed up in their homes would need something to do, but....then they couldn't get out to their gyms or the gyms were closed. The second study includes an extensive review of scientific evidence that indicates exercise is a strong first solution for combatting depression and anxiety. I guess moving that body often gets you outside, in the sunshine, and feeling better! And lastly, Dr. Bonnie Henry is back! The BC Health Provincial Officer says Boomers over age 60 will qualify for a spring COVID booster shot starting in April. The age is over 50 if you are indigenous. Dr. Henry says "COVID-19 is circulating at a relatively high level and the virus is still changing; we will be in a very similar situation (in the fall)." So, this fall expect another COVID shot but it will likely be part of your regular flu shot...if you get one. Health, health, health Boomers....always on our minds. Cheers!
Today is your day Boomer! And today is another day for wining......and I don't mean complaining. I mean drinking some pressed grapes and enjoying the health benefits. That's right, drinking alcohol is good for you. First, let's state the obvious....only in moderate amounts: two glasses per day for men and one for women. Research shows the following positive health effects: (1) reduces risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson disease (2) is an anti-flammatory(white wine is better for this) (3) decreases risk of high blood pressure and high cholesterol(red wine is a better choice) (4) good for mental health, may increase age longevity, may promote healthy gut bacteria. All of this sounds good and much of it boils down to the antioxidants which are higher in red wine. It seems reds--like Merlot, Cab Sav, and Shiraz--have been studied more.....which means more research is needed on whites. Boomers, maybe we could volunteer for a new study! Cheers!
