Today is your day Boomer! I guess he is too old to be an official Baby Boomer....but at age 90, Willie Nelson sure has a lot of Boomer fans. He celebrated his birthday this week at the Hollywood Bowl and sang numerous old songs with his musical friends. Remember some of his big hits?...like "On The Road Again" and "Georgia On My Mind". But this is what I like about him; it was summed up perfectly by music writer Luis Viera: "The lesson of Willie is this: be who you are. If you are a long-haired cowboy in a pickup truck with mudflaps, have at it and God bless you. If you are that guy in the Baptist Deacon outfit – that is wonderful. If you are gay, or an evangelical, or a gay evangelical, great – go in peace. Do not be another sequel - Embrace that uniqueness you have among the 8 billion souls on earth." I think Willie is a role model for all of us Boomers. He continues to embrace his passion late into life, he is who he is, and he just loves music! Happy birthday Highway Man! Cheers.
Today is your day Boomer! Relaxing in my hot tub this morning, I had reflections of the 1970 CCR song "Lookin' out my Back Door". Yes, that kind of druggy, but catchy song, about the view of your backyard. Mine is spectacular: colourful sunrises, big ponderosa pines, cheer, apple, fir, and weeping willow trees, two mountains, sheep and chickens next door, two frolicking golden retrievers, beautiful green grass and what seems like a thousand birds...including quail, pheasant, chickadees, woodpeckers, and blue jays. And what else? Well....the quiet, the solitude, and the chance for reflection with no sirens, car noise, yelling people, or neighbours invading your privacy. It was...is...just beautiful, and I am so blessed to live in a rural area in BC's Okanagan Valley. Boomers, what's out your back door? John Fogerty's "tangerines and elephants" or something like my cheeries and coyotes? Check it out and appreciate the little things in life. Cheers...
