Today is your day Boomer! You know that TV show "This is Us" Boomers? Well, study this graph carefully, because it is us.....Baby Boomers born from 1946-64 and maybe the most influential generation in history! Where did our name come from? According to Investopedia, "Most historians say the baby boomer phenomenon most likely involved a combination of factors: people wanting to start the families that they put off during World War II and the Great Depression, and a sense of confidence that the coming era would be safe and prosperous. Indeed, the late 1940s and 1950s generally saw increases in wages, thriving businesses, and an increase in the variety and quantity of products for consumers." In other words, our parent had optimism and hope for a new, growing world after two global disasters. I also think our generational "name" is the best and most descriptive. How would you like to be called a "Zoomer" or a "Silent"?! But....we have dropped to #2 in overall population; the so-called Millennials now outnumber us. But do they out-influence us? I don't think so. Cheers to our strong future and a great retirement Boomers!
Today is your day Boomer! Well, yesterday was my day! My long-awaited dream of building and opening a new high school gym in Summerland came true! 550 students watched, smiled and vigourously applauded as the SD67 school trustees officially cut the ribbon and opened the facility. The kids played in their new gym, in a so-called Rocket Rally, right after that and then 200 more mostly-Summerlanders attended a two-hour opening fundraiser that evening. There were people, young and old, every where: going on tours, eating food, watching volleyball and basketball, listening to speeches, and investing money in 30 community-donated silent auction items and a huge 50/50 raffle...organized by the school's Parent Advisory Council. The final fundraiser tally was about 7000$...made in only two hours! Congratulations students and staff of SSS. Your new gym is finally here, the first new one since 1951! Play on....
