Today is your day Boomer! What are you doing with your time Boomers? Recreating, working, volunteering, babysitting grandchildren: all great ideas and perfect for people in their aging years! But there is a new "senior" movement out there....a move toward political pressure and civic activism. More and more Boomers, like us, are stepping up for positive climate action change and that means pressuring industry, banks, and government. One group is called Seniors For Climate Action Now, or SCAN, which recently held a Toronto protest against RBC....a big bank which invests heavily in fossil fuels. There, they hoisted placards, chanted anti-capitalist slogans and listened to a variety of speakers criticize RBC's investment practices. At one point, a number of SCAN members even donned masks for a bit of street theatre, in which they spoofed a climate debate with bankers. SCAN spokesperson Peggy Lathwell says, "I'm terrified of what we're doing to the environment, to the Earth; I just see us heading like lemmings over the cliff." Boomers, we represent about 20% of the population in Canada and the USA, and that number is rising. Our generation has influence, money, and we vote in the highest numbers. Therefore, we have clout! Many of us also have grandkids and we want a bright future for them. Something to consider for you? Cheers!
Today is your day Boomer! And today is another day for wining......and I don't mean complaining. I mean drinking some pressed grapes and enjoying the health benefits. That's right, drinking alcohol is good for you. First, let's state the obvious....only in moderate amounts: two glasses per day for men and one for women. Research shows the following positive health effects: (1) reduces risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson disease (2) is an anti-flammatory(white wine is better for this) (3) decreases risk of high blood pressure and high cholesterol(red wine is a better choice) (4) good for mental health, may increase age longevity, may promote healthy gut bacteria. All of this sounds good and much of it boils down to the antioxidants which are higher in red wine. It seems reds--like Merlot, Cab Sav, and Shiraz--have been studied more.....which means more research is needed on whites. Boomers, maybe we could volunteer for a new study! Cheers!
