Today is your day Boomer! You know Boomers, we want you to chase your dreams....but you have to wonder about this one! 63-year-old Pieter Swart of Vancouver died this week from a respiratory event during his ascent of Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world. His co-worker says "We lost Pieter while he was bravely and courageously pursuing his dream of being on top of the world, since he was nine. As many of you know, Pieter had an insatiable wanderlust." He passed on while pursuing his passion and that is, of course, honourable. But the death statistics for climbing Everest are abominable! Well over 300 men and women have died on the mountain and that includes 12 already this year. He also was a victim of what is called the "Death Zone", which according to Wikipedia is where "many deaths in high-altitude mountaineering have been caused by the effects of the death zone, either directly (loss of vital functions) or indirectly (unwise decisions made under stress or physical weakening leading to accidents). In this zone, the human body cannot acclimatize, as it uses oxygen faster than it can be replenished. An extended stay in the zone without supplementary oxygen will result in deterioration of bodily functions, loss of consciousness, and death." Yikes. My condolences to Pieter's family and friends. In conclusion, I say continue to dream big Boomers, but do your research and exercise great caution.
Today is your day Boomer! Relaxing in my hot tub this morning, I had reflections of the 1970 CCR song "Lookin' out my Back Door". Yes, that kind of druggy, but catchy song, about the view of your backyard. Mine is spectacular: colourful sunrises, big ponderosa pines, cheer, apple, fir, and weeping willow trees, two mountains, sheep and chickens next door, two frolicking golden retrievers, beautiful green grass and what seems like a thousand birds...including quail, pheasant, chickadees, woodpeckers, and blue jays. And what else? Well....the quiet, the solitude, and the chance for reflection with no sirens, car noise, yelling people, or neighbours invading your privacy. It was...is...just beautiful, and I am so blessed to live in a rural area in BC's Okanagan Valley. Boomers, what's out your back door? John Fogerty's "tangerines and elephants" or something like my cheeries and coyotes? Check it out and appreciate the little things in life. Cheers...
