Today is your day Boomer! A different idea, but a good idea for Boomers aged 55 or older. I had never heard of this before, but Kelowna, B.C. is hosting a unique three-day festival starting June 21 which has a focus on two things: movement and the arts. The Rotary Centre for the Arts is launching its "Creative Aging Festival" which is for people looking to embark on an inspiring adventure, exploring a variety of workshops that celebrate movement, self-expression and the possibilities of artistic exploration. Okay, give me some examples of work....er, play shops please! According to Castanet News, "Scheduled events for the festival include beginner's ballet, nia dance, community movement, energy fitness, salsa dancing, circus arts, mandela movements, tea and coffee socials, and more." To me, it sounds like creativity, active involvement and social interaction with other Boomers and seniors all rolled into one. You can get more info at the Rotary Centre for the Arts website. Have fun and cheers!
Today is your day Boomer! Well, yesterday was my day! My long-awaited dream of building and opening a new high school gym in Summerland came true! 550 students watched, smiled and vigourously applauded as the SD67 school trustees officially cut the ribbon and opened the facility. The kids played in their new gym, in a so-called Rocket Rally, right after that and then 200 more mostly-Summerlanders attended a two-hour opening fundraiser that evening. There were people, young and old, every where: going on tours, eating food, watching volleyball and basketball, listening to speeches, and investing money in 30 community-donated silent auction items and a huge 50/50 raffle...organized by the school's Parent Advisory Council. The final fundraiser tally was about 7000$...made in only two hours! Congratulations students and staff of SSS. Your new gym is finally here, the first new one since 1951! Play on....
