Today is your day Boomer! We know walking is good for you Boomers, but how about walking soccer? Yup, we take the most popular game in the world and bring it down to a level where many seniors can now participate! One person involved is James Stitchman(the guy in the picture) who jokingly says "I'm the only player on the field today I think who ended up with about 11 yellow cards or warnings for running." I get that....you get excited and that ball is so close and you want to score, so you run a bit. Not allowed. Okay, so this game--only offered so far in North Vancouver, BC--is not for everyone.....especially, very fit, youngish Boomers. But think of the growing popularity of pickleball; it is a slowed-down version of tennis on a smaller court. And the medical benefits of walking soccer? According to CBC News, "playing walking soccer can bring numerous benefits — from reducing blood pressure and blood sugar levels, to improving people's mental health through socializing." There is a problem though as related by another player named Linda: "[I'm] a little worried about those 60-year-olds who are going to be a lot faster than me because I'm almost 73." Hmmmmm, yup, those young Boomers could dominate this game! Oh well, just have some fun and get some good exercise. Cheers!
Today is your day Boomer! And today is another day for wining......and I don't mean complaining. I mean drinking some pressed grapes and enjoying the health benefits. That's right, drinking alcohol is good for you. First, let's state the obvious....only in moderate amounts: two glasses per day for men and one for women. Research shows the following positive health effects: (1) reduces risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson disease (2) is an anti-flammatory(white wine is better for this) (3) decreases risk of high blood pressure and high cholesterol(red wine is a better choice) (4) good for mental health, may increase age longevity, may promote healthy gut bacteria. All of this sounds good and much of it boils down to the antioxidants which are higher in red wine. It seems reds--like Merlot, Cab Sav, and Shiraz--have been studied more.....which means more research is needed on whites. Boomers, maybe we could volunteer for a new study! Cheers!
