Today is your day Boomer! You know I was a high school history teacher right?....for three decades. I taught world history in grade 12 and civil rights leaders were part of the curriculum. People like Rosa Parks, Mohandas Gandhi, and Nelson Mandela were main subject topics for my students and I taught from the perspective of role models. What could visionary leaders, like Martin Luther King Jr., teach us about ourselves and their methods of non-violent protest. As an example, 60 years ago today, the American black rights activist made an incredible, defining speech. Delivered to over 250,000 civil rights supporters from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., the speech was one of the most famous moments of the civil rights movement and among the most iconic speeches in American history. The most famous part? Probably this section: "So even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." Boomers, we are still working on that dream. Yes, in nations like America and Canada....and really, still worldwide. We salute you on this day Dr. King, huge progress has been made...but the job is not done. Cheers.
