Today is your day Boomer! I can't find the exact numbers....but about one million people play recreational hockey in Canada. I'm sure a few hundred thousand of those are Boomers and/or seniors who play late evening beer league hockey. Ever watch a game? It can get pretty competitive as pucks, sticks and skates are flying everywhere! Now...one person has died and one almost died in games in the past two weeks. The latest is this young man shown in the picture. The stitches come from skate cuts to the neck as players fall on a slippery surface and other skates rise up accidently. The man who survived wore a neck guard, which many players refuse to use. Why? Neal Pionk of the Winnipeg Jets says "It’s kind of like wearing a dress shirt and your tie is all the way up, it feels like that; you feel restricted and it’s a little warm, too.” But it was his friend that passed away in a hockey game in England, so he now uses the guard and says, "I don't notice it much during a game. There’s too much adrenalin flowing through my body; it's just a matter of getting used to it." Good advice Boomers from a NHL player! By the way, they are cheap. Only about 20 bucks...worth your life? Cheers.
Today is your day Boomer! Relaxing in my hot tub this morning, I had reflections of the 1970 CCR song "Lookin' out my Back Door". Yes, that kind of druggy, but catchy song, about the view of your backyard. Mine is spectacular: colourful sunrises, big ponderosa pines, cheer, apple, fir, and weeping willow trees, two mountains, sheep and chickens next door, two frolicking golden retrievers, beautiful green grass and what seems like a thousand birds...including quail, pheasant, chickadees, woodpeckers, and blue jays. And what else? Well....the quiet, the solitude, and the chance for reflection with no sirens, car noise, yelling people, or neighbours invading your privacy. It was...is...just beautiful, and I am so blessed to live in a rural area in BC's Okanagan Valley. Boomers, what's out your back door? John Fogerty's "tangerines and elephants" or something like my cheeries and coyotes? Check it out and appreciate the little things in life. Cheers...
