Today is your day Boomer! Did someone say...."finally"! Yes, and I hope all these fossil fuel-burning countries mean it!! According to The Associated Press, "United Nations climate negotiators directed the world on Wednesday to transition away from planet-warming fossil fuels in a move the talks chief called historic. 'Humanity has finally done what is long, long, long overdue, 'Wopke Hoekstra, European Union commissioner for climate action, said. After nearly 30 years of talking about carbon pollution, climate negotiators in a key document explicitly took aim at what’s trapping the heat: the burning of coal, oil and natural gas." What are some of the numerical goals?
(1) The deal includes a call for tripling the use of renewable energy and doubling energy efficiency. (2) The transition would be done in a way that gets the world to net zero greenhouse gas emissions in 2050. (3) It projects a world peaking its ever-growing carbon pollution by the year 2025. (4) The conference also adopted a special fund for poor countries hurt by climate change and nations put nearly $800 million in the fund. Okay...lots of talk, maybe action right? That's the pessimist in me. The optimist sees that the big boys have signed too: Saudi Arabia, China, and the U.S. to name a few. Boomers, cross your fingers....here's hoping everyone takes it seriously!
Today is your day Boomer! And today is another day for wining......and I don't mean complaining. I mean drinking some pressed grapes and enjoying the health benefits. That's right, drinking alcohol is good for you. First, let's state the obvious....only in moderate amounts: two glasses per day for men and one for women. Research shows the following positive health effects: (1) reduces risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson disease (2) is an anti-flammatory(white wine is better for this) (3) decreases risk of high blood pressure and high cholesterol(red wine is a better choice) (4) good for mental health, may increase age longevity, may promote healthy gut bacteria. All of this sounds good and much of it boils down to the antioxidants which are higher in red wine. It seems reds--like Merlot, Cab Sav, and Shiraz--have been studied more.....which means more research is needed on whites. Boomers, maybe we could volunteer for a new study! Cheers!
