Today is your day Boomer! Baby Boomers will have vivid memories of him...perhaps the greatest hockey player of all time, the young man who revolutionized the game! Yup, Number Four, Bobby Orr and according to hocky writer Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun....we are in danger of forgetting his accomplishments: "Orr won his first NHL scoring title in 1970 — as the first, then later the second, defenceman in hockey history to win an Art Ross Trophy. The first came 54 years ago. At the height of his brilliance, in an unmatched six-year period, Orr scored 734 points, finished first in NHL scoring twice, second three times, third once. Most of that coming more than 50 years ago." And the article, published two days ago, goes on to list his other "team" accomplishments like two Stanley Cups! But why talk about this? Young people know the current star athletes like Connor McDavid, but do they really know and recognize the greatness of past stars like Wayne Gretzky, Pele, and Jim Brown. I hope so....and Boomers, like me, think they should take the time to learn and watch their past heroics! YouTube is one way of viewing the past....there are many others including biographies. Simmons says "It’s like listening to Sinatra. It’s like getting tickets for Pavarotti. It’s timeless and breathtaking." Cheers!
Today is your day Boomer! And today is another day for wining......and I don't mean complaining. I mean drinking some pressed grapes and enjoying the health benefits. That's right, drinking alcohol is good for you. First, let's state the obvious....only in moderate amounts: two glasses per day for men and one for women. Research shows the following positive health effects: (1) reduces risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson disease (2) is an anti-flammatory(white wine is better for this) (3) decreases risk of high blood pressure and high cholesterol(red wine is a better choice) (4) good for mental health, may increase age longevity, may promote healthy gut bacteria. All of this sounds good and much of it boils down to the antioxidants which are higher in red wine. It seems reds--like Merlot, Cab Sav, and Shiraz--have been studied more.....which means more research is needed on whites. Boomers, maybe we could volunteer for a new study! Cheers!
