Today is your day Boomer! I guess I have been spelling "yuk" wrong on my blog....the correct way is actually "yuck" and it truly is a very-expressive slang word....especially in this case. They are nicknamed the 'Dirty Dozen', the annual list of 12 worst vegetables and fruits for unacceptable traces of pesticides. According to CNN, "Approximately 95% of nonorganic strawberries, leafy greens such as spinach and kale, collard and mustard greens, grapes, peaches and pears" are on the list. Add in nectarines, apples, bell and hot peppers, cherries, blueberries and green beans. These foods, coming from America, are some of my favourites! On the flip side, "Avocados, sweet corn, pineapples, onions and papayas led the 'Clean Fifteen' list of conventionally-grown produce with the least amount of trace pesticides.....and frozen sweet peas, asparagus, honeydew melons, kiwis, cabbage, watermelons, mushrooms, mangoes, sweet potatoes and carrots. So, what is the problem you say? Health, health, health....you get a higher chance of cancer, heart disease, and other medical issues. So, Boomers, I know you like to eat healthy. You have two options(1) buy organic, which is more expensive...or (2) wash! Here is the best way: "Starting with clean hands, wash and rub produce under running water instead of soaking to remove the most pesticide. Don’t use soap, detergent or a commercial soak or scrub, as they have not been proven to be any more effective. Dry the produce with a clean cloth or paper towel." Here's to good, CLEAN eating Boomers. Cheers!
Today is your day Boomer! Relaxing in my hot tub this morning, I had reflections of the 1970 CCR song "Lookin' out my Back Door". Yes, that kind of druggy, but catchy song, about the view of your backyard. Mine is spectacular: colourful sunrises, big ponderosa pines, cheer, apple, fir, and weeping willow trees, two mountains, sheep and chickens next door, two frolicking golden retrievers, beautiful green grass and what seems like a thousand birds...including quail, pheasant, chickadees, woodpeckers, and blue jays. And what else? Well....the quiet, the solitude, and the chance for reflection with no sirens, car noise, yelling people, or neighbours invading your privacy. It was...is...just beautiful, and I am so blessed to live in a rural area in BC's Okanagan Valley. Boomers, what's out your back door? John Fogerty's "tangerines and elephants" or something like my cheeries and coyotes? Check it out and appreciate the little things in life. Cheers...
