Today is your day Boomer! Sometimes other generations make fun of us Boomers. Is it jealousy, or is it because our generation has traditionally taken a leading role in our society? I don't know....but I do know websites like moneywise.com, publish lists like this: "16 useless baby boomer life skills". Here are a few examples: (1) Reading a map: "reading a physical map can be a little intimidating, but it may be a worthwhile skill to learn and maintain for those rare in-case-of-emergency situations." (2) Driving a stickshift: 96% of North Americans now drive automatic transmissions! (3) Writing in cursive: "the rise of email, digital note-taking and even e-signatures has limited the opportunities to ever show off your fancy penmanship." (4) Using a landline: like the fancy red one in this picture, the article mocks us with "It won’t be long now before the only corded phone you’ll find will be in a museum." (5) Ironing your clothes: "A lot of clothing is now made with wrinkle-resistant fabric, so that you can fold or hang it once it comes out of the dryer." (6) Writing letters: "Group chats with your best friends, emails with your mom, and sending a quick text have become so common-place that sitting down to write a letter, sealing it in an envelope, finding a stamp, and then going for a short walk to drop it in a mailbox can seem like too much work." And the list goes on-and-on....Boomers, it basically says our lifestyle is often out-of-date and laughed at by other generations. I wonder if they understand the "intrinsic value" of many of these activities....like the calming effect of reading a good paper novel! Cheers to us Boomers!
Today is your day Boomer! Relaxing in my hot tub this morning, I had reflections of the 1970 CCR song "Lookin' out my Back Door". Yes, that kind of druggy, but catchy song, about the view of your backyard. Mine is spectacular: colourful sunrises, big ponderosa pines, cheer, apple, fir, and weeping willow trees, two mountains, sheep and chickens next door, two frolicking golden retrievers, beautiful green grass and what seems like a thousand birds...including quail, pheasant, chickadees, woodpeckers, and blue jays. And what else? Well....the quiet, the solitude, and the chance for reflection with no sirens, car noise, yelling people, or neighbours invading your privacy. It was...is...just beautiful, and I am so blessed to live in a rural area in BC's Okanagan Valley. Boomers, what's out your back door? John Fogerty's "tangerines and elephants" or something like my cheeries and coyotes? Check it out and appreciate the little things in life. Cheers...
