Today is your day Boomer! Yesterday, I blogged about the importance of Earth Day and citizens(like us, Boomers!) who need to do more individually to help save our planet. More practicing of things like the 3R's: reduce, reuse, and recycle. More other stuff too like biking, electric scooters, and walking to reduce our dependency on oil. And then my own community announced this week a new, great idea that could get more and more people out of their gas-guzzling cars. According to the Summerland Review, "A free transit fare program for Summerland residents has become permanent, following a one-year pilot project. While other B.C. communities have offered low-cost fares or select free ridership on certain days or for specific age groups, Summerland is the first community in the province to offer ongoing free fares for residents of all ages." I really like this concept, and it is whole heartedly supported by local mayor Doug Holmes: "It reinforces the principle that mobility is a right and that transit is a public good, like schools and libraries – services that some people use more than others but which benefits the community as a whole.” This is social democracy....this is what makes Canada different from many other countries, including the United States. Imagine this now....for all communities, big and small....especially cities! Who in their right mind wouldn't take the "free" bus, train, or any style of rapid transit? Cheers!
Today is your day Boomer! Relaxing in my hot tub this morning, I had reflections of the 1970 CCR song "Lookin' out my Back Door". Yes, that kind of druggy, but catchy song, about the view of your backyard. Mine is spectacular: colourful sunrises, big ponderosa pines, cheer, apple, fir, and weeping willow trees, two mountains, sheep and chickens next door, two frolicking golden retrievers, beautiful green grass and what seems like a thousand birds...including quail, pheasant, chickadees, woodpeckers, and blue jays. And what else? Well....the quiet, the solitude, and the chance for reflection with no sirens, car noise, yelling people, or neighbours invading your privacy. It was...is...just beautiful, and I am so blessed to live in a rural area in BC's Okanagan Valley. Boomers, what's out your back door? John Fogerty's "tangerines and elephants" or something like my cheeries and coyotes? Check it out and appreciate the little things in life. Cheers...
