Today is your day Boomer! Most of you know I am a retired BC high school teacher and current school trustee. Education has been a huge focus in my life for almost 40 years....so, I read with great interest the educational "school" promises made by the top three political parties in BC.
(1) Green: "The Greens would establish a digital literacy secretariat and ensure that every middle school and high school student receives a laptop for school work. Putting laptops in the hands of every student from Grade 6 to 12 is expected to cost $110.5 million annually, including software and cybersecurity costs. The Greens would also institute an universal school food program, as well as double the funds for mental health support staff in schools."(timescolonist.com) (2) NDP: "bring costs down for even more families through affordable before-and after-school care in every school district....Add tens of thousands of new, desperately needed accessible and affordable child care spaces....expand the public school meals program, helping your monthly budget and improving students’ health, learning and outcomes."(bcndp.ca) (3)Conservative: "reinstating provincial exams for Grade 10 and 12 students, restoring letter grades for students in grades 4-9, and ending the SOGI 123 program....they also intend to restore school liaison officer programs, offer funding to parents of children with autism and offer tax credits or direct payments for parents who homeschool their children."(cbc.ca) Boomer voters, education is the second biggest budget item in our province. Please choose carefully this week and do your research. Cheers!
Today is your day Boomer! Well, yesterday was my day! My long-awaited dream of building and opening a new high school gym in Summerland came true! 550 students watched, smiled and vigourously applauded as the SD67 school trustees officially cut the ribbon and opened the facility. The kids played in their new gym, in a so-called Rocket Rally, right after that and then 200 more mostly-Summerlanders attended a two-hour opening fundraiser that evening. There were people, young and old, every where: going on tours, eating food, watching volleyball and basketball, listening to speeches, and investing money in 30 community-donated silent auction items and a huge 50/50 raffle...organized by the school's Parent Advisory Council. The final fundraiser tally was about 7000$...made in only two hours! Congratulations students and staff of SSS. Your new gym is finally here, the first new one since 1951! Play on....
