Today is your day Boomer! Wow, this is quite an accomplishment for a Boomer....for anyone really! This is Ron Perrier from Courtenay, B.C. who spent the last 18 years travelling to every country in the world! And according to the encouraging-travel website Nomadmania, that is the magic number of 193. Ron is retired and aged 74; here are some of his special memories: "walking 2,000 kilometres of the Camino de Santiago, travelling overland on the Silk Road from Xian, China to Israel, completing 107 dives in places like Palau, Raja Ampats, Komodo and Sipadan, and spending two years driving 200,000 km from Iceland to Azerbaijan."(Summerland Review) Despite seeing some of the most beautiful places in the world, Perrier very rarely takes photos. He prefers to travel alone, forgoing any tours, resorts, guides, or even souvenirs. Instead, he says that travelling the way he does is much easier when it is done on the cheap, alone and with no itinerary. Okay....sounds kind of lonely, but I guess it works really well for him! By the way, some trips weren't without problems. In Afghanistan, he "was detained by the Taliban; they took me to their secret compound and I was blindfolded and interrogated for five hours." Hmmmm. Sounds scary. Better do your research, Boomers, before you leave. Cheers.
Today is your day Boomer! And today is another day for wining......and I don't mean complaining. I mean drinking some pressed grapes and enjoying the health benefits. That's right, drinking alcohol is good for you. First, let's state the obvious....only in moderate amounts: two glasses per day for men and one for women. Research shows the following positive health effects: (1) reduces risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson disease (2) is an anti-flammatory(white wine is better for this) (3) decreases risk of high blood pressure and high cholesterol(red wine is a better choice) (4) good for mental health, may increase age longevity, may promote healthy gut bacteria. All of this sounds good and much of it boils down to the antioxidants which are higher in red wine. It seems reds--like Merlot, Cab Sav, and Shiraz--have been studied more.....which means more research is needed on whites. Boomers, maybe we could volunteer for a new study! Cheers!
